Oil price falls, for now, as Saudis trump Iran threat

December 29, 2011 - 06:20 pm

ABC7's Jummy Olabanji reports that, according to AAA, the average family in the D.C. area has spent about $4,500 on gas for their cars in 2011. That's up from $3,700 in 2010. She talks with some drivers about how they feel about that.

NEW YORK (AP) - Oil prices fell on Wednesday, as Saudi Arabia said it will offset any loss of oil from a threatened Iranian blockade of a crucial tanker route.

In New York benchmark crude fell 77 cents to $100.57 a barrel. Brent crude fell 82 cents to $108.45 a barrel in London.

Iranian officials have said that Iran might close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, if western nations embargo the country's oil because of its ongoing nuclear program.

A Saudi oil ministry official told The Associated Press that Saudi Arabia and other Gulf producers are ready to provide more oil if necessary. Some analysts think the Iranian threats are more posturing than a real concern.

Meanwhile in the U.S. the average price of gas rose a penny to $3.24 a gallon.

US denounces Chavez cancer comment (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration is denouncing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for questioning whether the U.S. might be behind a rash of cancer cases among Latin American leaders.

The State Department on Thursday said Chavez's comments were "horrific and reprehensible." Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said they were not worthy of further response.

Chavez has long questioned whether the U.S. government could be plotting to oust him. But earlier this week he went far beyond that, saying it was very strange that he and the leaders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay have struggled with cancer.

He said he wasn't accusing the U.S. and doesn't have any proof. But he asked, in his words, "Would it be strange if they had developed a technology to induce cancer and no one knew it?"

Canon Color imageClass MF8080Cw

At first glance, the Canon Color imageClass MF8080Cw ($449 direct) seems a little large for a color laser multi-function printer (MFP) meant for light-duty printing in a micro, home, or small office or as personal printer in any size office. However, the size and weight would have been typical just a few years ago. More important, if you have room for it, the printer's capabilities?most notably its paper handling and print speed?are just right for the intended use. That makes it a reasonable choice, if not a perfect fit.

Very much in the MF8080Cw's favor is that it offers much the same capability as the Editors' Choice Dell 1355cnw Multifunction Color Printer ($419.99 direct, 4 stars) that I reviewed last year. It can print, scan, and fax, including over a network, work as a standalone copier and fax machine, and also scan to or print from a USB memory key. For scanning, its 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF) serves as a complement to the flatbed and lets it handle multipage documents as well as legal-size pages.

The key issue that limits the printer to light-duty use is its paper handling, with a 150-sheet input tray and no duplexer. If your print needs?including copying and printing incoming faxes?are more than about 30 pages per day, having to constantly add paper may turn into an annoying chore. However, 150 pages should be sufficient for the light-duty print needs in most small offices.

Setup and speed
The MF8080Cw is big and heavy by today's standards, at 16.9 by 17 by 19.2 inches (HWD) and a hefty 57.4 pounds. That's about 20 pounds more than the 1355cnw, and heavy enough so most people would consider moving it a two-person job. It's also big enough to be a potential issue in a small office where flat space can be at a premium. Once you find a spot for it, however, setup is standard fare.

The printer offers both WiFi and wired network support. For my tests, I set it up on a wired network and installed the driver on a Windows Vista system. On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software) it managed a lackadaisical 3.7 pages per minute (ppm).

Canon Color imageClass MF8080Cw

That's an appropriate speed for the rating, at a relatively slow 12 ppm for monochrome and 8 ppm for color. It's also faster than some of the printer's competition, including, for example the similarly priced HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw color MFP ($449 direct, 4 stars) and the HP TopShot LaserJet Pro M275 ($399.99 direct, 3 stars) that I recently reviewed. However, it's slower than the Dell 1355cnw, at 4.5 ppm, and it's not fast enough for its speed to count as a strength.

Output Quality and Other Issues
The MF8080Cw's output quality is uneven, with better than par graphics for a color laser MFP, photos at the low end of par, and below par text. Fortunately, the bar for laser text quality is high enough that being a bit below par isn't much of an issue. Unless you have a highly unusual need for printing at small font size, you should find the text more than acceptable for any business need.

The graphics output in my tests was easily suitable for any business need as well, including output meant for potential customers who you need to impress with a sense of your professionalism. Most people would consider the graphics to be good enough for printing their own marketing materials like one page mailers or tri-fold brochures.

You may or may not consider the photo output to be high enough quality for the same sort of marketing materials or for, say, client newsletters. I saw some graininess and a slight color shift, which could be an issue for anything that needs to show well, like a landscape filled with colorful flowers.

I'd like the MF8080Cw more if it were smaller, faster, had a higher paper capacity, or some combination of these. Even as it stands, however, it's worth considering, with a more than acceptable balance of speed, output quality, and MFP features. Its size may make it a little hard to find room for if space is tight, and the 150-sheet capacity rules it out for offices with heavy duty print needs. But if you have room for it, and need light-duty printing only, it's a reasonable choice, if not a compelling one.

Blast From The Past: Williamson, Wariner Blaze 4?400 Legs At NCAA?s

Home ? Sprints ? Blast From The Past: Williamson, Wariner Blaze 4?400 Legs At NCAA?s

Baylor teammates Jeremy Wariner and Darold Williamson were on top of the collegiate sprinting world in 2004. Wariner claimed the 400 meter title at the NCAA outdoor championships to go along with his indoor crown he won earlier that year while Williamson was sixth.

The two superstars joined forces on Baylor?s 4?400 meter relay on the final day of competition. Wariner took the baton for his third leg in seventh place and proceeded to run a stunning split of 43.9 seconds to move the Bears into the lead. Williamson then ran a solid 44.4 second anchor to hold off Mitch Potter of Minnesota to earn the win for Baylor.

Wariner went on to win the 400 meters at the Athens Olympics later that summer and again teamed up with Williamson to claim gold for the United States in the 4?400 relay.

Illegal Immigration Truth = NBC owns Telemundo, Texas Pacific Group owns Univision.

hehehehehehehe! You already did that for me

City Data banned me. They are strict about naming companies and when I trashed NBC I got in trouble even though their members gave some minor discontent with NBC.

I don't go around and install links in my posts normally even though I did forget to remove my website link from Alipac and didn't get banned. Lots of websites ban members for leaving links. Tea Party Patriots is strict about installing links and talking openly so I stay away from that site.

No, I'm far from a troll with the NBC message I'm posting. A troll would never trash their supported media source.

As for this message being "Shit". I understand your wording but just to clarify this message is the truth and not "Shit". People do read these posts and may interpit the wording the wrong way.

OK, I'm off to post elsewhere but will post here from time to time. Gotta make people aware that massive corruption concerning immigration may exist. I've gotten replies on other sites and the people are really pissed to here it.

AT&T completes acquisition of Qualcomm's FLO TV spectrum

It's only been five days since it's gotten the official go ahead, but AT&T's wasted no time in completing its acquisition of a swath of 700MHz spectrum from Qualcomm. Those airwaves, which formerly powered FLO TV, were purchased for a cool $1.9 billion and will now be repurposed to bolster Ma Bell's LTE network. It might not have been everything the carrier had hoped for, but additional spectrum is better than none, right? Possibly the shortest press release you'll ever see awaits after the break.

Deutsche Boerse, NYSE extend merger deadline to sway Europe (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext have extended the deadline for completion of their planned merger to March 31 next year as they seek to convince European regulators to back the $9 billion deal.

The exchanges, which agreed the merger on February 14, told the Securities and Exchange Commission last week they were exercising their right to extend the initial termination deadline of December31 2011.

The extension came after months of frantic lobbying by the merger partners as they try to convince European anti-trust authorities in Brussels to approve the combination -- the last hurdle to the deal.

European authorities are fearful the merged entity would have a monopoly in European futures and options and have sought remedies from the exchanges, which between them have over 90 percent of European trading, to address this concern.

The exchanges offered concessions in November, including spinning-off parts of NYSE's futures trading business and offering open-access to D.Boerse's clearing unit to rival exchanges.

But these were rejected by European officials, prompting further concessions two weeks ago and an assurance last week that derivatives trading fees would be capped for three years after the deal.

But European regulators last week showed no signs of buying these arguments, fuelling speculation the exchanges would look to bypass the anti-trust team and focus their lobbying on competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia.

The exchanges are likely to make a case for why their deal to create a pan-European exchange operator -- and the world's largest -- would be good for the European Union at a time when the continent is in financial crisis.

Both sets of exchange shareholders and the U.S. anti-trust authority have approved the deal so the European Commission is the last major hurdle for what would be the largest exchange merger in history.

The Commission is scheduled to decide whether to approve the merger by February 9 but Almunia said last week a decision on the deal was possible by the end of January.

Washington Wizards Preview: Eight Storylines

WASHINGTON (WUSA/The Wiz Kid) -- Our insider Kevin "Wiz Kid" Jones previews eight burning questions about the Wizards 2011-2012 season.

Is this the season John Wall makes a Russell Westbrook/Derrick Rose like jump into becoming an elite scorer?

My view is that Wall will continually give us a glimpse of jaw-dropping ability?that he could one day become an MVP candidate like Rose, but I don't think this is the year he averages 20 points per game. Look around at the roster. There are too many guys who like firing up shots as soon as they get the ball (Blatche, Young, McGee, Lewis and Crawford). Wall won't reach his true potential surrounded by a bunch of me-first type of guys.

If you're looking to see improvements from John Wall, then?it hopefully will come in the midrange shooting variety. Opposing defenses can have success against the 6-foot-4 guard when sagging off on him and forcing jump shots. As soon as his midrange game becomes potent, Wall will have all the tools of a franchise cornerstone.

Who is more valuable to this team: JaVale McGee or Nick Young?

Both are free agents following the season. Both will want around $10 million a season. Also, if both were kept on long term contracts it might be time for Wizards fans to burn all of their merchandise.

I'm torn on this one because I'm not sold on either, but give me McGee. He's just 23-years-old and at times can be a defensive stalwart. One of JaVale McGee's problems is that he has the touch of an axe murderer from five-eight feet from the basket. It would be enormous to see his rebound numbers get into the double digits this year.

Nick Young could be replaceable through the draft, although we saw how bad the Washington offense was without him against the 76ers in the preseason opener. He's solely a scorer, which means people completely overrate him when looking at the numbers. ??

Will we notice anything different about Andray Blatche?

I think so. Blatche has taken on the more serious role as a team spokesman in the locker room to the press. In doing so, I think he will hold his basketball game more accountable. According to HoopData.com, last season Blatche averaged 4.1 shot attempts per game from 16-23 feet away. I think you'll see that number lower and some increased defensive intensity from Andray Blatche.

Is there a possibility Flip Saunders resigns?

There is absolutely a chance. If you haven't heard the Saunders presser from last Friday, please go ahead and listen to his cynical tone after just one preseason game. Flip just seems drained from the lack of team work and defensive effort put out from the Wiz. It reflects poorly on him as a coach. The team is a depressing 49-115 during this regime.

As much as I like Saunders as a coach, maybe a change would spark the Wizards. Washington assistant coach and longtime NBA point guard Sam Cassel would be my first choice to replace Saunders if some kind of change is deemed to be made. Cassel is a three-time NBA champion (most recently in 2008 with the Celtics) and is known for his feistiness.

Which rookie will make the biggest impact?

Chris Singleton. After just one preseason game I'm almost ready to anoint the Florida State alum as the Wizards' best wing defender. Singleton's great because he also forces turnovers on either blocks or deflected passes because of his 7-foot-1 wingspan. Also watch out for his baseline shooting. I think by February Singleton will be ready to replace Rashard Lewis in the starting lineup.

Will the additions of Roger Mason Jr. and Ronny Turiaf matter?

Yes and no. Mason is willing to give free advice to guys like Wall, Young and Shelvin Mack. The question is will they listen? I'm a huge Ronny Turiaf guy, but I'm also huge on letting younger pieces get experience during a rebuilding mode. Turiaf's addition will limit Kevin Seraphin and especially Trevor Booker from becoming potential impact players.

What/who will be the biggest surprise in 2011-2012

I have this little feeling that Nick Young could play with a vengeance this season after getting spurned by the Wiz and the NBA without a big contract reward. Even if he is a ball-hog (and lord knows the NBA is full of ball-hogs), the 26-year-old excelled in his first real chance of playing time. I say Nick Young averages 20 points per game, flashing his pure scoring ability night-in and night-out. Will that be enough for the Wizards to re-sign him? Hopefully not.

What percent chance do the Wizards have of making the playoffs?

15 percent. The only bottom barrel teams in the eastern conference that are worse than Washington are Charlotte, Cleveland, Toronto and maybe Detroit. I'd argue Indiana and Philadelphia are locks for the playoffs, meaning the Wizards are competing with Milwaukee and New Jersey for the final eighth seed. If Wall makes a tremendous leap, don't rule out anything. ?

Kim Jong Un dubbed "supreme leader" of military

(AP)?

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea hailed Kim Jong Il's son as "supreme leader" of the 1.2-million strong military, ramping up its campaign to install the young man as the next leader of the communist nation even as millions continue mourning the father a week after his death.

Kim Jong Un made a third visit Saturday to the palace where his father's body is lying in state ? this time as "supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces" and accompanied by North Korea's top military brass, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

The new title and public show of support from the military leadership sent a strong signal that the nation will maintain Kim Jong Il's "military first" policy for the time being.

Earlier Saturday, the newspaper Rodong Sinmun, mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, also recognized the young man's authority over the military by calling him "supreme commander" of the armed forces.

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled in September 2010 as his father's choice as successor, will be the third-generation Kim to rule the nation of 24 million. His father and grandfather led the country under different titles, and it remains unclear which other titles will be bestowed on the grandson.

Kim Il Sung, who founded North Korea in 1948, retains the title of "eternal president" even after his death in 1994.

Kim family myths renew with a roar in N. Korea
Loss, fear, threats drive N. Korean mass grief
Pentagon sees smooth change so far in N. Korea

Son Kim Jong Il ruled as chairman of the National Defense Commission, supreme commander of the Korean People's Army and general secretary of the Workers' Party.

Kim Jong Un was promoted to four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party. He had been expected to assume a number of other key posts while being groomed to succeed his father.

His father's death comes at a sensitive time for North Korea, which was in the middle of negotiations with the U.S. on restarting talks to dismantle the North's nuclear weapons program in exchange for aid, and had been preparing for 2012 celebrations marking Kim Il Sung's 100th birthday. Suffering from a shortfall in basic staples after several harsh seasons, officials also had been asking for help feeding its people.

North Korea has emphasized the Kim family legacy during the sped-up succession movement for Kim Jong Un. State media invoked Kim Il Sung in declaring the people's support for the next leader, comparing the occasion to Kim Jong Il's ascension to "supreme commander" exactly 20 years ago Saturday.

At the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, Kim Jong Un and senior commanders paid silent tribute to the late leader, "praying for his immortality," KCNA said. The military also pledged its loyalty to Kim Jong Un, the report said.

"Let the whole army remain true to the leadership of Kim Jong Un over the army," KCNA reported ? a pledge reminiscent of those made when Kim Jong Il was named supreme commander.

The call to rally behind Kim Jong Un, dubbed the "Great Successor" in the wake of his father's death on Dec. 17 from a heart attack, comes amid displays of grief across North Korea. The country is to remain in an official state of mourning until after Kim's funeral Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

In Pyongyang, mourners continued Saturday to bow and lay flowers at Kim's portrait at plazas and government buildings, including the Pyongyang Circus Theater and Kim Il Sung Square, even as temperatures dropped to 14 degrees below Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit).

At the April 25 People's Army House of Culture, workers at beverage kiosks handed steaming cups of water to shivering mourners, including children bundled up in colorful thick parkas. A sign urged mourners to thaw out inside a heated bus.

The order to provide food and warming huts for mourners came from Kim Jong Un, officials said.

Swap MP3s in Google Music, Amazon Cloud, and iTunes

Right now, it's a great time to be a music lover with a digital collection, but it may not be so great if you haven't committed to a single device.

I'm a great lover of gadgets, so I have a few iOS devices, a few Android devices, and a Kindle Fire, which uses a version of Android restricted to Amazon. If I want to listen to my music collection, I've got three different options, and some of those options won't work on other devices. I also really like a good bargain, and this year both Amazon and Google are eager to win customer loyalty with fantastic sales and even giveaways on music. That means I've got a pastiche of music sources and cloud storage options, and I've yet to commit to one place to listen to it all. Are you in the same boat? If so, this tutorial is for you.

The best solution is to duplicate the collection in iCloud/iTunes, the Amazon Cloud, and Google Music. All three places offer some free storage of purchased music, and if one source fills up or decides to start charging, you can still rely on the other two. One caveat: They don't work in every country.? I can only guarantee that these services work in the US.

I started with my iPod many years ago. I'd used iTunes to rip all my CDs, and I had a few songs I purchased. Apple and other companies stopped selling music with DRM restrictions years ago, but I still have some earlier DRM-restricted purchases in my collection. I can't move songs with DRM to other cloud players, but there are ways around that problem.? I think that's a common starting point, so let's go from there. If you're using Mac OSX Lion or an iOS 5 device, you can take advantage of iCloud, which is a lot like iTunes only the syncing is stored online, but you can't use it with other devices. You could use an app like DoubleTwist, but I like the idea of just having my music where I need it .

Getting Your iTunes Music to Google Music

  1. Google Music is on the Web at music.google.com.?
  2. You'll need to sign up for an account.
  3. Next, you can download the Google Music Manager to run on your Windows or Mac desktop. This handy little app can be set to upload all your non-DRM iTunes music. It may take a few (or several) hours to upload your collection, but once you've done that step, you can also set it to upload all future non-DRM MP3 and AAC files that end up in your iTunes library. That's important for future purchases. It means any songs you buy from Apple or download from Amazon or any other source are going to end up in your Google Music library without you having to think about it.

Getting Your Google Music Back to iTunes

You can use that same Google Music Manager on your desktop to download your music.

  1. Go to the preferences and pick Download.
  2. Choose the check mark next to "Only include songs since last download."
  3. Choose your iTunes music library for the download location.
  4. That means you'll download any new songs you purchase and make it a two-way street for syncing.

Getting Your Music to Amazon Cloud Player

Amazon can do the same thing with their Cloud Drive and Cloud Player, but it's a slightly more manual process. The good news is that you currently have unlimited space for music.

  1. You'll need to download two desktop apps. There's a downloader and an uploader.
  2. Use the uploader to upload your non-DRM iTunes files into Amazon's Cloud Player. Just point it to your iTunes library.
  3. Set Amazon to automatically download new purchases as well as adding them to Cloud Player.
  4. Drag the songs into iTunes. This will both add them to iTunes and trigger Google Music to upload them.
  5. Run the uploader again whenever you add more music to iTunes. It won't duplicate existing songs in your Cloud Drive.?

It doesn't take much effort to keep your music stored in all three places, but if you only use two services, you can skip whichever service you don't use. Use a generic folder instead of your iTunes library, for example.

'Knock Out': Attacks target random victims

Matthew Quain still struggles to piece together what happened after a trip to the grocery store nearly turned deadly. He remembers a group of loitering young people, a dimly lit street ? then nothing. The next thing he knew he was waking up with blood pouring out of his head.

The 51-year-old pizza kitchen worker's surreal experience happened just before midnight earlier this year, when he became another victim of what is generally known as "Knockout King" or simply "Knock Out," a so-called game of unprovoked violence that targets random victims.

Scattered reports of the game have come from around the country including Massachusetts, New Jersey and Chicago. In St. Louis, the game has become almost contagious, with tragic consequences. An elderly immigrant from Vietnam died in an attack last spring.

The rules of the game are as simple as they are brutal. A group ? usually young men or even boys as young as 12, and teenage girls in some cases ? chooses a lead attacker, then seeks out a victim. Unlike typical gang violence or other street crime, the goal is not revenge, nor is it robbery. The victim is chosen at random, often a person unlikely to put up a fight. Many of the victims have been elderly. Most were alone.

The attacker charges at the victim and begins punching. If the victim goes down, the group usually scatters. If not, others join in, punching and kicking the person, often until he or she is unconscious or at least badly hurt. Sometimes the attacks are captured on cellphone video that is posted on websites.

"These individuals have absolutely no respect for human life," St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said.

Slay knows firsthand. He was on his way home from a theater around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 when he saw perhaps a dozen young people casually crossing a street. He looked to the curb and saw Quain sprawled on the pavement.

Slay told his driver to pull over. They found Quain unconscious, blood pouring from his head and mouth.

Quain was hospitalized for two days with a broken jaw, a cracked skull and nasal cavity injuries. He still has headaches and memory problems but was finally able to return to work earlier this month. Hundreds gathered in November for a fundraiser at the restaurant where he works, Joanie's Pizza, but he still doesn't know how he'll pay the medical bills.

"I don't remember much of what happened," Quain said. "I was hanging out with a friend, celebrating the Cardinals in the World Series. I went to the store and saw a group of kids who looked out of place, suspicious, but I shrugged it off. I got around to the library, and the next thing I remember is waking up on the corner with the mayor standing next to me. I tried to say 'hi' but my jaw was broken."

It isn't clear how long Knockout King has been around, nor is the exact number of attacks known. The FBI doesn't track it separately, but Slay said he has heard from several mayors about similar attacks and criminologists agree versions of the game are going on in many places.

  1. Only on msnbc.com

    4. Attorney, accountant taken off Huguette Clark estate
    5. What kids around the world feed Santa
    6. After Katrina, a promise is kept
    7. Hoop dreams bring Israelis, Palestinians together

St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom said the city has had about 10 Knockout King attacks over the past 15 months.

Experts say it is a grab for attention.

"We know that juveniles don't think out consequences clearly," said Beth Huebner, an associate professor of criminology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "They see something on YouTube and say, 'I want to get that sort of attention, too.' They don't think about the person they're attacking maybe hitting their head."

Scott Decker, a criminologist at Arizona State, said the attacks are a modern extension of gang-like behavior ? instead of painting over another gang's graffiti as a show of toughness, they beat someone up and post a video on social media sites. The postings spur copycat crimes.

"It's adolescent and early adults, largely male, showing how tough they are. It's done to show off," Decker said.

Earlier this year in Chicago, a group of teens followed an elderly homeless man at a train station. One of the teens walked up to him and punched him in the face, knocking him out as the teen's friends laughed and mocked the man. The exchange was captured on video and posted on a hip-hop site, where it got about a quarter of a million views within two days. The teen was not arrested because police couldn't locate the homeless man to see if he wanted to press charges.

The crimes aren't limited to big cities. In 2009, Adam Taylor had just entered a parking garage in Columbia, Mo. Surveillance footage from the garage showed a group of teens following him. One of the teens attacked, punching Taylor and sending him crashing into a brick wall. A few seconds later, the others joined in, punching and kicking him as he lay on the ground. Taylor suffered bruising on the brain, whiplash and internal bleeding but survived.

Hoang Nguyen wasn't as fortunate.

The 72-year-old retired schoolteacher immigrated to St. Louis from Vietnam with his wife less than four years earlier to be near their daughter. The couple was returning to their apartment after walking to a grocery store on an April morning in broad daylight.

They took a shortcut through an alley, where they saw a group of young people approaching. Suddenly, one of them charged. Hoang was attacked as he stepped in front of his wife to protect her. The attack went on as he begged for mercy, she told police.

Hoang died of massive injuries. Elex Murphy, 18, was charged with first-degree murder and allegedly told police the attack was part of the Knockout King game. His attorney declined to comment.

St. Louis authorities are going to the source to combat further attacks. A special police squad has been assigned to focus on Knockout King, and a city prosecutor is designated for the attacks. But Isom said equally important is an outreach effort to talk to students.

"Certainly we take this very seriously and we're making every effort to stop it," Isom said.

North Korean power-behind-throne emerges as neighbors meet (Reuters)

SEOUL/BEIJING (Reuters) ? North Korean television Sunday showed power-behind-the-throne Jang Song-thaek in the uniform of a general in a sign of his growing sway after the death of Kim Jong-il, and Japan's prime minister said the region faced a new phase with Kim's demise.

Footage that North Korean television said was shot on Saturday showed Jang on the frontrow of top military officers who accompanied Kim Jong-un, the youngest son of Kim Jong-il and his anointed successor, paying their respects before Kim's body.

The choreography around Kim's death is one of the secretive North's few, opaque clues to the emerging configuration of power in this poor and isolated state that has rattled neighbors with nuclear tests and military brinkmanship.

A Seoul official familiar with North Korea affairs said it was the first time Jang has been shown on state television in a military uniform. His appearance suggested that Jang has secured a key role in the North's powerful military, which has pledged its allegiance to Kim Jong-un.

North Korea announced Monday Kim Jong-il had died of a heart attack on December 17. His body is lying in state in a mausoleum in Pyongyang. He was believed to be 69.

Kim Jong-un was hailed by state media Saturday as "supreme commander" of the North's 1.1 million-strong armed forces, the title held by his father.

A senior source told Reuters this week Pyongyang will shift from a strongman dictatorship to a coterie of rulers including the military and Jang, Kim Jong-un's uncle.

Jang married the daughter of the country's revolutionary founder, Kim Il-sung, in 1972, joining the ruling family that has forged its own form of dynastic rule.

"AN NEW PHASE"

In Beijing, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that their two countries shared a stake in preserving stability in North Korea in a "new phase."

"The death of Secretary-General Kim Jong-il has brought East Asia to a new phase," Noda told Wen at the start of bilateral talks in China's capital.

Noda is the first regional leader to visit Beijing since Kim Jong-il's death was announced Monday, leaving his young son Kim Jong-un as leader of North Korea, which has rattled the region with nuclear tests and military confrontation.

But Beijing is acutely sensitive about upsetting North Korea, especially during the current delicate transition, and Wen and Noda kept their public remarks free of controversy.

"Both sides agreed that preserving the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula serves the interests of all sides," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in its account of their talks, according to the ministry website (www.mfa.gov.cn).

Wen and Noda also agreed on seeking an early restart of the six-party nuclear disarmament talks that North Korea abandoned.

China is North Korea's sole major economic and diplomatic partner, and the United States and its regional allies have long pressed Beijing to use its influence to rein in Pyongyang.

China has sought to defuse confrontation by hosting six-party nuclear disarmament talks since August 2003. The now-stalled negotiations bring together North and South Korea, China, the United States, Japan and Russia.

In April 2009, North Korea said it was quitting the talks and reversing nuclear "disablement" steps, unhappy with implementation of an initial disarmament deal.

Constraining North Korea is especially important for Japan, which is well within range of the North's long-range missiles and wants Pyongyang to resolve the emotive issue of the fate of Japanese citizens kidnapped to help train spies decades ago.

"It is very significant that we affirmed close communication with China, the chair country of the six-party talks," Noda told reporters after his meeting with Wen.

"We agreed that we need to address the (North Korean) issue calmly and properly and to keep close contact with each other."

Google reports 700,000 new Android devices activated every day (Digital Trends)

In the battle for mobile platform dominance, Android is increasing its presence to the tune of 700,000 new devices every single day.

The number was reported by Android platform chief Andy Rubin (in a post on Google Plus, of course), and indicates an impressive rate of growth for Google popular mobile platform. Back in July, the company reported that it was activating 550,000 new devices each day.

And just to head off those who?d question the definition of a ?new activation,? Rubin followed up his original post with some clarification:

?and for those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don?t count re-sold devices), and ?activations? means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.

Google announced last month that it had activated over 200 million new Android devices ? a number that indicates the mobile platform war is far from over.

Michael Jackson doctor files appeals notice in LA (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The doctor sentenced to four years behind bars for causing Michael Jackson's death has filed a notice that he intends to appeal the conviction.

Conrad Murray signed a one-page document that was filed in Los Angeles on Friday seeking all records and transcripts from the case. The filing does not indicate the basis on which Murray will argue to overturn his conviction or sentence.

The 58-year-old was sentenced Tuesday to four years in jail for his involuntary manslaughter conviction, but the term will be automatically cut in half.

Murray's challenge will be heard by a state appeals court in Los Angeles, assuming he files an opening brief at a later date.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor blasted Murray's conduct on Tuesday, calling him a disgrace to the medical profession.

94% Hugo

All Critics (141) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (132) | Rotten (8)

Scorsese transforms this innocent tale into an ardent love letter to the cinema and a moving plea for film preservation.

'Hugo': Scorsese's humbling hommage to his favorite art

Thematic potency and cinematic virtuosity -- the production was designed by Dante Ferretti and photographed by Robert Richardson -- can't conceal a deadly inertness at the film's core.

For all the wizardry on display, Hugo often feels like a film about magic instead of a magical film...

I have seen the future of 3-D moviemaking, and it belongs to Martin Scorsese, unlikely as that may sound.

It's a fairy tale for mature viewers, but the airy exterior hides emotional depth.

The heart-shaped story may be the key that sets Hugo in motion, but this rediscovery of the cin?ma de papa is most memorable for its technical wizardry and astonishing visual trickery.

Scorsese's regular production designer Dante Ferretti has outdone himself with this set, and I can understand the desire to show it off, but this is the first time I've felt a closer attachment to one of his sets than the people who are on it.

It is glorious to be thrown and blown about in this make-believe metropolis. The digitally enhanced shapes and colours suggest Jeunet and Caro reworked by a polychromatic Piranesi.

As soon as the lights went up in the theater, I told my viewing companions that I honestly felt that seeing the film was a privilege.

[T]here's certainly much to admire here... [but] Hugo feels like two very different films inelegantly spliced together...

It's possible to see the attraction, but when people break into applause over the credits, some are going to be left cold.

It's a deeply felt piece of work, something which only Scorsese could have brought to the screen...

Beautifully photographed and well acted but the storyline, especially when Kingsley's character takes center stage, is tediously tiring

Martin Scorsese unleashes his devotion to the magic of movies with a zeal that is enchanting.?

For youngsters with a secret sense of wonder about how the world works, Scorsese is offering a golden key to a limitless world of make-believe.

A masterpiece of visual storytelling and a heartfelt homage to the industry that Scorsese has triumphantly made his own.

Beautifully made and superbly acted, Hugo features terrific 3D effects and stands as a charming love letter to silent cinema, but it's let down by a weak central plot and the script never quite connects on an emotional level.

It might be curtains for celluloid, but Scorsese, a boyish 69, clearly isn't leaving the stage any time soon. He directs every film with the passion of his first. And it shows.

Director Martin Scorsese's well-documented affection for all things cinema has never been more evident than in the enchanting and imaginative Hugo.

It sounds a bit strange to say this about the man who gave us Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and so many other classics of hardcore machismo, but Martin Scorsese's new movie Hugo is delightful.

Scorsese's best film since Goodfellas... a celebration of the transportive joy that comes from watching [movies].

The charming if overly gilded story of an unwanted teenage boy rescued by art and friendship.

Something very rare: a celebration of past achievement that doesn't succumb to nostalgia. Scorsese pays his respects to the past but also demonstrates that the artform Melies loved remains exciting.
